Pensacola is a sunny beach town located on the westernmost edge of the Florida Panhandle. Home to “The World’s Whitest Beaches” along its pristine coastline, the city was originally colonized by the Spanish in 1559 and some consider Pensacola to be the oldest European settlement city in North America. The city was originally named after the Pensacola Tribe, who the Spanish first met when they arrived in the area.

Pensacola is also nicknamed the “Cradle of Naval Aviation” due to the large Navy base located just outside the city. Naval Air Station Pensacola is the oldest aviation base in the Navy and also the home of the world-famous Blue Angels, who often practice just off the coast. Be sure to check out the National Naval Aviation Museum to learn more about Pensacola’s role in the history of flight.

The city is also home to a number of other museums that celebrate its varied past. Visitors can learn about the history of seafaring at the Pensacola Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. The museum is located at a historic lighthouse and visitors can learn more about the vital role these buildings played in the development of the region. Other popular museums include the national landmark Fort Barrancas, which was once a Spanish fort, and the Pensacola Museum of Art, which houses its collection in the Old City Jail originally built in 1906.
