The Academy

Pros: Lovely neighborhood with park nearby. Anytime eating in main DR. Scooters OK. Cons: very old building; assisted living in separate building, must go outside to go to main blding; studio apts only in AL. This is not for Mom

I went on a tour here and the staff was nice and helpful. They answered all of my questions. It was nice and clean. They have more care options here. But not a lot of amenities for the price. I would recommend families tour this community before making a choice.

I toured this facility and liked it. I thought it was really pretty. However, I didn’t care for the dining room. It was on the lowest level and had an odor to it that I didn’t care for. The kitchen seemed clean, so I don’t know if it was musty because of the carpeting or what. But the rooms were nice, big, bright, and they had big, beautiful windows. It was a nice facility just not a good fit for my Mom.

The food is good and they offer a variety of choices. The staff are friendly and helpful. They offer daily activities. The community is clean and the grounds are nice. There is a park next to it for the residents to enjoy. The community does have only one elevator. I would recommend this community.

The Academy, A Merrill Gardens Community is a beautiful historic building situated in a park. The decor is just beautiful. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting. The staff is very friendly and caring and attentive to my mom's care needs. Mom's room is very nice, we have brought in her things to make it very homey for her. I have dined with my mom and the food is really good, they offer a wide variety of healthy choices, the meals are well balanced. There are plenty of activities that the staff encourages the residents to participate. They have porches with seating provided and they can also walk around the park to enjoy the roses and fresh air. We would highly recommend this community to others.

It was an older facility. Which wasn't a problem. We felt that it could not the complicated needs of our brother at this time.

We toured this community for my father's care. We liked that the staff was kind and able to answer the questions we had on the care that is offered. The menu was appealing and the community was very positive. They offer a nice list of activities for the residents. We wanted a community closer to home. We would recommend that families tour this nice community for the care of a loved one's needs.

I really like my new living environment at this community. Everyone has been so helpful and welcoming to me and I could not have asked for a better place. I enjoys my meals and dinning experience as well as different activities throughout the week with the other ladies. I am very happy and would recommend this place to anyone interested in a great place to live.

My Dad has been at the acadamy for three weeks now. He was reluctant to move but now he always seems happy. Everyone on the staff is phenomenal!

The Academy was by far the best place that we have ever seen. We toured over 6 places and had my loved one is 2 different communities, so we have experience. She loved what she saw, and we were very impressed with the community. We liked that she could be independent and still have a little bit of help when needed. The administration lady was great. I highly recommend this community to anyone!

We really enjoyed [Removed] and her kindness and knowledge. The facility is absolutely charming and homey. The one bedroom units are more than adequate and well laid out. The studios are small but the ones we saw are well decorated. The separation of the assisted living and unassisted living areas is unfortunate but understandable being an 100+ year old property. This is a place which needs to be looked at if you are considering a senior living option. It could be your place of choice!

A bit dated. Though it appeared clean, there was a bit of an odor that was noticed. We visited on a Sunday, and there was minimal staff about; which may entirely have been due to the time of day we visited.

This community was a good choice for my father. The staff is very helpful and attentive to his needs. My father's favorite thing about the community is the fact that the dining room is open from 7am to 7pm, so he can go have his meals when he wants to. The community is very clean and well kept up. The room he is in is very comfortable, he has a lot of windows that provide a lot of natural lighting. The only suggestion I have is I wish they had higher toilets in the bathrooms. The one he currently has is low in my opinion. I would definitely recommend this community to anyone looking!

This community is great. Staff is outstanding in everyway. I like the activities that are offered. The meals are very good. A clean community. I would highly recommend this community to others.

With the first visit to tour The Academy my mother and I found it to be inviting, and friendly. All staff was very welcoming. My mom found several things about the facility that she liked, the smaller size, friendly residents, the unique rooms gave her options, the dinning room was very nice, the food wonderful and had a great staff, The building and outside area were well maintained and gave her a neighborhood feel rather than looking out to a busy street or parking lot. After visiting several other properties she felt that The Academy was the right place for her, now a month later she is settled in and enjoying the activities, staff and other residents.

I was not impressed at all when I took my mother in for a tour. The man that was running the place I think his name was Mark was extremely rude to my mom and treated her like she was a child. None of the employees seemed happy to be working there and it looked liked when they seen the big guy Mark walking their way they tried to avoid him at all costs. (This) location of Merrill Gardens in Spokane WA gets a one star in my book. Very unprofessional.

This is a beautiful old building near Gonzaga, but only has small apartments. Nice dining room with "anytime" dining.

This is a nice place, very clean, and the staff have been very helpful. Initially we had my loved one in independent living, but it turns out she needed more assistance than what that entailed. Having to move rooms so soon after moving in was a little hard on her, so be sure your loved one is correctly assessed! They were very helpful and made the transition as easy as they could, however.

The Academy has fulfilled all of our expectations and more. The facility is clean, the staff is fantastic, helpful and very caring. We have peace of mind knowing that our mom is in a wonderful place that she really enjoys. The interaction between residents and staff is impressive to watch. The residents are all treated equally with respect, kindness and lots of patience by the staff, who are always available to speak with family, and answer any of our concerns. From maintenance to management, all seem to really enjoy their jobs. Our mom's evaluation meeting with Lauralee Gumm was very thorough, informative and also helpful to us. She took as much time as we needed to address all of our questions and still patiently and kindly interact with mom.
