It's never a good time to decide on assisted living facilities. Portland Place has been a great fit for our Dad. The staff is very caring and shows love constantly to the residents. They never hesitate to reach out to us about things we need to know. So happy with the whole place... !!

What has made Portland Place such a great experience for our family so far is the friendliness of the other residences and we enjoy the professionalism of the staff members. We would absolutely recommend this community to other families based on the experience we have had so far.

I love that the staff knows all the residents by name. It's the advantage of a small facility. Room sizes are excellent. My mother gets compliments on her "apartment ". It is a more small, personal facility. That's the reason we chose Portland. We thought a larger facility would be overwhelming and she would get lost among all the other residents.

We felt A Home for Mom made everything easier for locating a place for her and Portland Place is a good home for her as long as she doesn't need extensive medical attention. Their cleanliness, and very caring staff stood out for us.

The new management seems to be updating & refurbishing the place, new bright in the entry way, and updated sofas and chairs making the fireplace cozier. Also, the new flooring & tv area. I know had flood damage from heavy rains and glad to see repairs made. Such a big difference than when she moved in over 1 year ago. Unfortunately she doesn't go out of her apt much, her choice, staff & management try to encourage her but she doesn't want to. All & all very good environment & staff very friendly & seem to care about residents. This has also changed since she moved in. Much improvement!
The staff was the best part of Portland Place. They were caring and wonderful to my mom and the rest of us too. The manager of Portland Place does a great job of hiring top notch staff that she knows from her lengthy time in the industry. Staff tend to stay around a long time, which helps with the smooth running of the place. The marketing director we worked with was amazing. Shortly after my mom moved in, she left to work closer to her home, but recently she went back to Portland Place because it's that good. They keep the trash emptied every shift, which keeps the place smelling good. It never had the soiled diaper smell. Ever. The food seemed to be great, but my mom really never noticed with her dementia getting deeper all the time. I would recommend Portland Place as a good option for your family member. One thing not as great was they really pitched their location as a final stop for my mom. But, as she got more demented, and fell several times (shattered her shoulder on the last fall) the manager said mom would have to have an outside aide with her during the night. With the cost already over $[removed]/month, an expensive aide was not an option. Also, they don't accept Medicaid once the money runs out, so I was a nervous wreck because my mom might just live forever. She's 96 now. After her two-month rehab stint following the shoulder break, we relocated her to a different facility which is awesome as well, AND accepts Medicaid. Taking care of an aging loved one with dementia is never easy, but there are enough good times that we're able to weather the bad times.

Portland has been very good with my husband. They are very kind and caring. Thankfully my husband has a motorized wheelchair which has given him freedoms to come and go to meals and activities. He has been with Portland a couple months now and we are all continue making adjustments to his needs. Nothing is perfect and we are working out the kinks. I work full time still as I am only 63 but I am there every evening to get him ready, in bed and comfortable before I leave. The issues I have had have been addressed promptly and with compassion. Like I said nothing is perfect. We are working towards a better overall rating. There have been a couple issues of miscommunication with meds and hygiene but as I said my concerns are being heard and rectified this far.

Upon our first contact with Portland Place, we were treated with such kindness and professionalism that it was a very calming experience amid a most stressful time. They had the right answers for all our questions including, "can her little dog live with her?" (The answer was yes!) When my mom first arrived, the manager had only been there for three weeks and there were some care aspects that were not handled as well as they should have been. This mostly concerned communication (lack of) among the staff of 12 nurses. But, any problems aside, my mom is very happy living in her two-room "apartment" as we call it. The meals are good, the happy hours are nice, and the handyman, [name removed], is a gem. The room cost plus care level costs is pretty high at $[removed], but I can't put a price on my mom's happiness. And she is happy!

Portland Place has been awesome. They seem to really truly care about the residents. If there any questions or concerns they will notify you right away. They know who she is, she is not just a number to them and they take great care of her. They really get to know the residents. I am very impressed and would recommend Portland Place to other families.

It's an excellent facility to have your loved one. Communication between Portland Place and me and my family has been great. They have called me on numerous occasions about my dad, his medications, etc.. They've kept me well informed while he's been staying there. My dad's place is good for just him. It is small; but it has cupboard space, a microwave & fridge, with a nice sized closet. He has a bathroom with a walk in shower, which is most excellent. It's just big enough for a single bed, sp it might not be for those who need several beds or rooms, as it's more like a studio. I would recommend Portland Place to others. One of things that turned me off with other communities was not only the price, but their director(s). My dad is a Veteran and other directors talked to me, but not to him. It was almost like he wasn't even there. Whereas when we met with the director of Portland Place, she spoke to my dad and not to me. She only directed her words towards me if my dad didn't understand or hear what she said. She also gave us all the options as far Veterans were concerned, whereas other places did not. [name removed] of Portland Place was so upbeat, and very friendly & welcoming.

I would say that we are quite pleased with the care that my sister is getting at this community. They have activities like bingo, the social director tries to have work out activities also. My loved one has not been able to participate much due to how she has been lately. The staff know what they are doing at this community with the care that they are giving my loved one.

Portland Place was owned by the same people as the place we chose. Pricing was similar, and they were really very similar in a lot of ways. But we especially liked the staff at the other place we chose - they were just outstanding.

My 90+ year old parent's moved in in April and immediately felt comfortable and at home. They loved their apartment, the food, and especially the staff. Dad's health issues got the best of him and he passed in Aug., receiving wonderful care by both the staff and hospice. Soon after we moved mom into a studio apartment where she is happily residing, in spite of the fact she misses my dad terribly. The staff has been helping mom through this terrible time as much as my husband and I- they are so supportive, caring, understanding and loving with her it brings tears to my eyes. Mom loves the activities available, especially bingo, and is thrilled when Henry, the house cat, visits. Today they are going on a "field trip" to get ice cream. The facility is small, so mom does not get lost in the crowd. All the staff is wonderful, including the support people, and everyone pitches in when needed and necessary. They are all like family and treat the residents like family. Mom is happy!

I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones. This is a smaller community. You can get answers to your questions, and sometimes it is hard to leave messages for our loved one to call us back. They are going through an administrative change and staff changes recently. Our experience has been during COVID, and this can make some of this harder for our loved one and family. They have better at cost effectiveness than some other communities in the area. They also have a memory care unit. The staff take care of reminding to get up, bed time, and medication distribution. We had anticipated more activities for memory and one-on-one care for the residents in the memory care unit.

A Place for Mom has scored Portland Place 9.4 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
