Excellent Senior Housing

Luther Knoll is an "independent lifestyle" low-income (subsidized) senior community, meaning that there are income and equity requirements. Such are beyond the scope of this review. The minimum age to be accepted is 62, although some exceptions may be made for disabled at 55 years or older. Before I moved in here, I checked all of the available senior independent-lifestyle housing facilities on the Iowa side of the Quad Cities, being at least ten such facilities. Of those, Luther Knoll was by far the best-kept, although all of the area facilities managed by Homz Management appeared to be well-managed. The three-story building is 17 or 18 years old, so it's relatively new, It's well-maintained. Before I moved in, new carpet was installed, and a fresh coat of paint was put on the walls. Of course, it was deep/thoroughly cleaned and all appliances and the central air were checked and fixed if needed. The residential units are slightly on the small side, but by no means cramped. Electricity is used (no gas), and all utilities (power, water, trash, sewer) are paid. The resident is responsible for television (i.e. cable), internet, and telephone service, if such are wanted. The kitchen contains a standard 4-burner stove and oven, a freezer-on-top refrigerator, and a dual sink. There is no dishwasher or garbage disposal. There is ample cupboard space. Each unit comes with a large walk-in closet with plenty of shelves, another smaller closet with shelving, and a standard closet for coats and such. The bathroom has a walk-in sit-down (if needed) shower (no tub) that is handicapped-accessible, and of course a sink and toilet. The bathroom contains shelving for related supplies. Lighting is excellent; there are lights in the kitchen, hallway, bathroom (two, one having an exhaust fan), the large walk-in closet, a 5-bulb chandelier in the living-room area, and in the bedroom. The bedroom is ample-sized and will easily hold a king-sized bed. There are many electrical outlets throughout the apartment. The central air heat can be individually-controlled by temperature and fan-speed, or it can be turned off. However, it's seasonally adjusted. It's strictly air for several months and strictly heat for the colder months. This is typical of senior housing. It may be advisable to own a small space heater (especially since electricity is included) for the rare cold-snap that may occur after the air is turned on, although the building holds its temperature for a good while. Management is very cooperative; be it known that the manager is only there two days and half of another day per week; the rest of the time is spent at another property. Maintenance exists every day, and it's available 24/7 for emergencies. The place is well-maintained and kept. There are emergency cords (which reach down to the floor for pulling in case of a fall) in the bedroom and bathroom areas. Pulling the cord activates an alarm that will list the unit number on a panel and allow residents to check and see if help (i.e. 911) is needed. I still recommend that concerned residents keep a cell phone or Life-Alert type system nearby. A tidy laundry room is on the premises, as well as an activity area of sorts. Activities are planned for various times throughout the week. Of course, there's an elevator, and there are some vending machines available. Security is excellent; A key is required to enter the building; visitors need to phone the resident to be "buzzed" in. The building is in a very quiet area, well-off the road. 200 feet away is a HyVee grocery store, although reaching it on foot requires navigating a small hill. Also nearby are Walgreens, Subway, Papa John's Arby's, U.S. Bank, Burger King, Taco Bell, Whitey's, Rudy's Taco, etc. Several other places of business are within an easy drive. I-74 is about 4 minutes away by car, and the Elmore/53rd area is about 7-8 minute drive, with the nearest Walmart at about 10 minutes. Most of the residents are polite and outgoing. Overall, this is a well-kept place, and I recommend it to anybody looking for such housing for themselves or a loved one.... Read more

The web page for this site is misleading

The web page tells you there's free high speed internet access and free local channels It's supposed to be a secure building with electronic entrance. Upon signing my lease I was told oh no there's no free high speed internet access and there's no free channels. The security door has been broken. You can't be paged and let somebody in from your. They have to call you on your phone and you have to walk down to the door and let them in. We have three floors of residence here. The property managers will not pay to fix a system. There was a male resident here that had keys to all the apartments. And he walked in on a woman one night. I've been told that he no longer has a key. But still for older women living alone this is scary. I was on a weekend trip. Came back & my freezer door was standing wide open. I was told, sorry for your inconvenience. Most likely the property owners going to reimburse me when I was told there's probably a faulty seal in the freezer. I still have a list of

Incredibly friendly residents and staff!

This place has been great so far! Mom was so worried about moving to an "old folks home", but after seeing how friendly everyone is and what a nice community they've got going here she loves it! She's only been there a little over a month, but she got birthday cards from so many people in the community, some she hadn't even met yet! They have all sorts of activities, and they do monthly potlucks and some reasonably priced in-house dinners. Tracy, the manager here, is one of the friendliest and most outgoing people I've ever met!
