Disappointment in less than 24 hours

My mother fell in her room during her first night in residence. The staff and management were aware of the need for full guard rails and choose to remove them from the hospice installed hospital bed. I do not know how long she was on the floor before they found her. A nurse did call me sometime during the early morning to tell me that she had fallen AND that she was in the ER at a local hospital. It was not until hours later that anyone from management called to follow up. After I had seen my mother in the ER, and after she was resting comfortably, I returned to the Cypen room and removed all of my mother's belongings. I lost the deposit monies required to establish her room approx [amount removed] - and any additional correspondence with them is superfluous. How can they persistently ask me to write a review, knowing our experience? I ignored the first two, but a third? My mother is 96, deaf, and has been in hospice care with another agency for more than a year-

Our Experience

I felt that Hazel Cypen Tower was the most secure of all of the facilities that I visited. The security at the gate was a key reason why I placed my dad there.

Terrific sales manager.

Sales manager, person who did all the work is excellent. The place needs some touching up. Carpet cleaned, walls touched up from banging wheel chairs. No problems with staff. Always helpful and friendly. Quality of care--took a while for them to recognize that he needing help. Not physically, but getting him oriented enough to function alone. Food is mediocre at best. I ate there 3 times, twice when I visited, and once as a special introductory initiation or thank you. Twice it was the same food and as I said, mediocre. The patient says the food is very bad. It appears there are activities but the patient only participates in walking. Price is reasonable but they just initiated a 3 1/3% increase. Which is less reasonable.

Caring and Kind

I can't say enough about the staff and residents. They are all so caring and kind. It took a while for my loved one to agree to move. We visited often. The food was surprisingly fresh and good. My loved one likes soup and they always have soup on the menu. Many, many activities including exercise, Jewish events my loved one calls "meetings" and live music in the lobby some afternoons. Best of all for me, I feel comfortable there! Again the people are great, my loved one's apartment is very nice (great view), and the grounds are absolutely lovely. My loved one and I love going for walks.

A very friendly staff community of residents

Improvements to staff and care: Perhaps an extra exercise class with a different instructor for variety (in addition to the chair class)? More aqua therapy?

Great community

I would highly recommend this community for independent living. The dining is primary and my loved one really enjoys the food. The housekeeping is good throughout the community. Any complaints response time is dealt with in a timely manner. The communication with the staff is good, they contact us if anything is going on. The only thing I would recommend is voice operated phones be available to residents who have slight vision/hearing problems.

No dietary restrictions

The food is terrible, and always salty. They always have the same menu. They need to improve the communication. The people are nice. They are often short staffed on the weekends.
