This home is ok if your family member only requires a room and meals. The nurses are not helpful at all. They are unable to provide minimum care and always jump to call 911 even against family written requests not to. My grandfather was basically kicked out because they couldn’t care for his basic needs.

Response from Carrington Place Retirement Residence
August 21, 2018I'm sorry that you had an unpleasant experience. Just to clarify the services that we provide. We are a retirement residence and not a long term care facility. All meals, daily and weekly housekeeping, personal laundry, assistance with bathing, towel service, medication administration, recreational activities and 24 emergency response call bells. It is the responsibility of the charge nurse to call for an ambulance if the resident is injured or in distress. Failure to do so would be neglect. It is also our responsibility to keep all residents and staff safe from aggressive behavior. We have a zero tolerance for abuse and neglect policy and we let all residents and their families be aware of this. We do not kick any resident out. If we are not able to care for a resident we arrange alternative care options and when a suitable place is available the resident would make alternative arrangements. We provide the highest quality care and service to our residents.
Mom's first choice of residence was Carrington. She had been a long time resident of Ancaster and wanted to stay in the area. Many Ancaster Residents live at Carrington. I always found the the residents to be clean, well cared for, your first impression of the building is the lobby, very welcoming with the dinning room and fireplace room on either side. Moms room was cozy, she had a single room. Bathrooms are well equipped with hand bars and emergency pulls for help. There was also an emergency pull near her bed. I ate several times at Carrington and found the food to be of a very good selection, well balanced meals and snacks, tea, coffee, and cold drinks were available 24/7. The staff at Carrington were so kind to my Mom and looked after her as all residents as if they were their own family. I can not praise the staff enough all staff, kitchen, housekeeping and nursing. Mom loved the musical entertainment and loved the to join in some of the many activities, card making, crafts and sing a longs. She also enjoyed the wine tasting and the cocktail hours provided by Carrington. Families of residents are invited twice a year to come and celebrate Christmas and the Summer with a Christmas Party and a Summer BBQ, never disappointed in the food. Staff take the time to introduce themselves to families and the decorations in the building are always beautiful for each season. Mom lived at Carrington for nearly four years and was well cared for during that time. We were fortunate to keep Mom in her room during palliative care, it was her wish to stay in her home, with the help of CCAC and the Community Palliative Care Team. I always felt confident that Mom was in a safe environment and that she well looked after. Something I could not do as I was working full time.

A nice place if you just want meals and a room. If your family member needs assistance look elsewhere. The staff can’t handle anything else. They don’t know what to do if someone has dementia or other medical issues.

Wonderful welcoming place. The rooms are beautiful and with a small kitchenette it is perfect! The meals are outstanding! I was at the Georgian and the meals were rarely very good, some days I could not eat what was served. They have a chef at Caroline Place and he is outstanding. The staff are wonderful. I am so happy! I wish I had done this years ago.

The retirement home nurses and administrator are condescending and rude to people who live there. The treat residents like children. They constantly overstep there authority by taking meds off of patients there by leaving residents without vital meds like blood pressure pills etc. They will not deal with conflicts between residents such as loud tv's going all night long. Although the home is clean it is old and run down. Generator is not big enough to run heat and lights through the home during power outages and snow storms (had to be evacuated). The food although we like the idea of the main meal being at lunch the food itself is not good. Salads consist of a few pieces of lettuce. We were told the food was all home made and it is not, most of it is salty boxed garbage and canned salty soups. People seem to move in and move out just as fast. The home does not like residents who can take care of themselves. They want to be able to over ride family wishes and resident wishes. All in all do not put your family member there unless they have full use of there faculties and can think for themselves. Be prepared for late night phone calls from your family member when meds are not given properly or not at all. Have your family member get daily packs made up from there local pharmacy and dont' let the home take care of it. They will mess it up big time. Lives are at stake here and there medical mix ups could kill someone. It is within walking distance of amenities such as grocery stores, hair dressers, doctors, labs and pharmacies.
