The facility is understaffed and the needed care and attention was not given resulting in several falls, poor hygiene and my father feeling abandoned. After raising the issues with the head staff, there was no change or improvement.

My loved one is currently a resident at Carriage Hill Retirement and overall her experience at this facility has been okay so far Everybody is as kind and as helpful as can be. However, the facility is very understaffed. They're all friendly and doing the best that they can but they are very understaffed. As for the food, they don't get much of a choice in what they have to eat. It's everybody gets the same thing. And it's not great quality. They do allow pets, which is great.

I was skeptical about Carriage Hill but the admissions lady [name removed]and the staff made me feel at ease with the process. It's been a few months since my uncle's been there and I can't complain, the staff and director of nursing listen and take care of him great.

I visited and heard from so many residents about all the fun they have doing so many different things. The building was clean and did not smell like the normal retirement community. All the staff seemed very friendly and knowledgeable and was interacting with the residents in the lobby area upon my arrival. I will be working with them to pursue placement for my father soon!!

My mother was first placed in the more independent building even though she had signs of dementia. She did quite well for a while. When her dementia and needs became greater, she was moved to the memory care building. There are fewer residents in this building and she receives more individualized attention. I have been very pleased, for the most part, with the care she has been given. The manager and head of nursing go to great lengths to insure the best care they are able to give. I have found those in charge as well as many of the employees to be very friendly and helpful.

The Memory Care facility is a great facility that is wide open for residents to wander. The facility sits at the base of the Peaks of the Otter which allows for most rooms to have a fabulous view. Most all rooms have been updated with new furnishings and new paint. Activities are always happening at the facility to keep the residents stimulated. Music is a huge part of Memory Care. You will always find residents dancing and singing when you enter the building.

I can tell Carriage Hill has come a long way from the past. The facility was clean, the furnishings have been upgraded, the residents seem to be well cared for and happy. The staff seem to really love what they do. The new management team seem to have a passion for caring for the elderly population. The memory care facility is absolutely beautiful with a wide open unit which allows lots of space for residents to wander and simply enjoy life!!

A very hard working team that takes pride in the care for the residents! The team likes to have fun with the residents. Long-term staff on site. Prices are fair and the facility is continuing to update the facility.

After looking for a few months for a place to move my mother, she had begun having dementia. I found Carriage Hill perfect for my mothers needs. It is a lovely quiet clean facility set in the scenic area of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Every time we go out my mother always commented on the beauty of the mountains. I found the staff competent and caring, if something needed attention, someone would come to take care of it. My mother always commented on how good the food was and that they gave you to much to eat. I’ve been in the dining room when the workers would ask "who wants more of whatever they were serving" they were not sticklers about time, my mother would sleep in and when she got up the kitchen staff would have her coffee and a bowl of cereal and toast so she would not be hungry before lunch. I highly recommend Carriage Hill. In the almost 3 years my 92 year old mother was there I never had any complaints. I saw her every week and she was always happy, clean and felt very content. As long as my mother was happy it made me happy and I felt at ease of her being cared for there. They would call when she had a cold and advise me of otc meds they were giving her. They were always about the comfort of the patient. I do wish they could have gotten her more interested in activities, but my mother was stubborn. Carriage Hill is an ecptional place, I was very satisfied with the facility as a whole.

Worst place I have seen all residents moping around never want do nothing only to me I saw residents willing to do anything and happy is when the new activities director was there she was amazing and wonderful you dont find people like her on daily basis she was making a diffrence to the place they should of never let her go that a person that should been kept it ashamed cause residents love her just amazing how fast that activities girl was making a diffrence some got the touch and she definitely had that impact on the place made me like more what was going on but now she gone I believe that was a huge mistake letting that activities director girl go huge who knows what gonna become of carriage hill without someone like her. If they dont bring her back I'm see that residents get better place than carriagehill to be at.

The turn over of employees will boggle your mind. The care that is given is ridiculous. You never know who the administrator are, who you address a concern with, and who’s in charge of what. You ask a question and no one ever gets back to you. When something happens they scramble to cover their back sides. This place is less than appealing when it comes to hygiene. Patients are allowed two showers a week. Really!, even when they have an issue with cleanliness it’s still two showers a week. I have had a loved one there for a while and my experience today only confirmed that I will be looking at another facility. The staff with the exception of a few are lazy, and uncaring. Lack compassion as well as common sense.

It is so disheartening to have a family member or a friend in this facility. These patients do not just decide to have dementia one day. They are at the mercy of their brains and they cannot change that. The care received at Carriage Hill is terrible. There were some of the employees who seemed to care, but they are stretched so thin, and they do not like each other, so that makes it even worse. I realize that these employees make very little money and the turn over is unbelievable, but maybe administration should consider giving more to the people who are making them money or hiring more people to make working conditions better so that these things do not happen. My family member never a clean pair of clothes on when I went to visit. She rarely even had on any of her clothes. Her hair was rarely ever combed. I had to constantly ask them to wash her hair. The answer to that was that she did not want her hair washed. REDIRECT PEOPLE, it usually works. I would not place anyone at this facility if I had any other choice. My family member died and not one person from Carriage Hill even contacted us to tell us how sorry they were. My family member had been at the facility for over two years at this point. Sad.Sad.Sad
