Poor experience

You just failed to reach the potential you promised. My mom has recounts some tardy response from manager and made mistake making my mom pay for “extra services”. Go there and talk to staff, they look tired and always running around. I suggests spending the day and you will see why response is lagging in service.

A caring community.

My parents have been residents at Canterbury Place for over 4 years and it has been a positive experience for them. It is a well maintained and welcoming place where my parents have always felt 'at home'. The meals are an especially notable highlight for them and the variety, quality, and portions are excellent - always healthy and fresh. Up until the covid restrictions, they enjoyed a variety of interesting activities - social, intellectual and physical. The staff have made a very good effort during the past difficult year to communicate with families and to keep residents engaged and connected in spite of lockdowns. Our family is truly grateful to the caring Canterbury staff for keeping our parents healthy and safe, during these difficult times.

Very happy

I'm so glad that we found this residence for my mom. She has enjoyed living at Canterbury Place for over six years now. She has thrived in all aspects of her life with the help of the staff, social programs and care at Canterbury. Staff has appropriately adjusted the amount of care as my mother's needs have changed over the years. They are extremely organized and quick to inform me of any concerns about my mom. Mom always says that the staff and meals are "A1".

Thanks Canterbury team

My mother has lived at Canterbury for over 3 years. We feel so lucky to have found this wonderful place for her. The staff have so much patience and dedication to the residents. Any request to reception is immediately followed up and dealt with. It gives the family peace of mind to know that our mother has a beautiful apartment and around the clock nursing care. Prior to Covid there were numerous activities which now that the residents are vaccinated hopefully will continue as well as the close and caring relationship among the residents.

Very caring staff

My Aunt is a resident at Canterbury for approximately 7yrs. I have to say the staff really go above and beyond in assisting the resident & family as much as possible. My most recent praise was the staffs eagerness to accommodate switching out a new mattress for my Aunt during Covid. . I'm a RN and my work schedule meant I couldn't look after the arrival of a new mattress and disposal of the old. [name removed]-manager , [name removed] maintenance staff & of course housekeeping & nursing staff came through for me. Appreciate all that they do to keep there residents happy & safe.

Great job!

I am so grateful that my Mom found her home here. Throughout these challenging times, I have been updated regularly and any concerns addressed promptly. Caring staff, excellent food have made the isolation bearable for my family. My favorite event was the outdoor concert of oldies played in the police station parking lot! My mom was thrilled! Keep up the good work and thanks for the continued updates of your daily interactions.

I enjoyed my tour of Canterbury Place. The lounge areas next to the lobby are being renovated to open up the rooms and will look lovely once completed. Lots of good activities listed in the monthly program. There is a medical centre next door with doctors, dentist, optomistrist, pharmacy, accessed by a corridor, while there is also a visiting doctor. I like the studio I looked at and the current residents loves the expansive west facing view from her balcony. I

Update -Pet friendly again

Pet friendly again. More dogs have moved in and there is a greater acceptance of them now. Cleaning staff still friendly. Food, according to some residents, is not as good as it used to be.

Not for Everyone

You might need to move because there are no assisted living services provided. Canterbury is for those who are active and in good health. That was not made clear to our family members when they moved in. People's health needs change, so it is important to be aware that you will be asked or encouraged to move to a new home at some point, unless you are very fortunate.

Was a nice place and lovely staff, however the building gave a sense of vertigo and disorientation due to the height of it and all the floors looking the same. the hallways are dark and narrow as well.

1. NOT pet friendly anymore. If you have a dog, you will be forced to carry it in your arms in the elevator. If you cannot do this, you will be forced to spend a lot of money purchasing a dog stroller that will take up a lot of room in your unit. NO garden area. Parks nearly but crossing is VERY unsafe on Ellerslie and Canterbury St.as there are no sidewalks on the north side of the street and not stop sign at the corner to cross Ellerslie. City said they are going to do something about this but who knows when. Management does not involve itself with resident safety outside the home, so some residents, on a few occasions, have walked down the street into the oncoming traffic. Be very careful if you need to cross Ellerslie, walk up to Yonge Street where there is a stop sign. 2. NOT enough outings. There is a nice company van but it is just for show. It sits idle for days aand weeks and does not take residents to local shopping centres or public swimming pools (outdoor in summer at Mitchell Field or indoors at Douglas Snow). It would be nice if the van were used to take people to local parks in the area and cultural events or concerts as well. If you can drive, bring your own car or take expensive taxis instead. If these are not options, you will be stuck in the residence pretty much year around except for a 2 or 3 outings a month, many of which involve going to the theatre or expensive restaurants. One trip was to Wal-Mart, though and was very popular. 3. Food is not always good. A lot of cookies and dessert to fill you up rather than a reasonable size bowl of healthy soup. Expect no more than a quarter cup size bowl for a meal. Your family members may need to supplement meals each week. If you invite family to barbecue lunch, you will be charged around 12 dollars for the lowest quality burger with only the most basic condiments --ketchup, mustard and relish--and a supermarket boxed neon green coleslaw salad. Convenience store ice cream for dessert. Thus not worth the money. 4. Staff are nice and do a good job cleaning and in reception. Activities such as excercise classes are enjoyable. 5. Most residents are nice and friendly. 6. Units are very, very small. Dimentions of the floor plan do not match reality. A very small fridge without a freezer, just a small ice box, makes it hard for family to bring your favourite dishes and store these. Microwave provided is useful. Laundry not in unit but one on every floor. Very god air conditioning and heating available on demand year round.

Disappointed

No garden, just terraces with hard concrete. Parks are a couple of blocks away but there is no safe sidewalk for crossing Ellerslie. Residents must be ablemobile to cross quickly South on Ellerlslie. Youth home with drug needle drop off next to retirement residence. Dirty, full of cigarettes. No sidewalk by the police and fire station, so the only option is to walk by the youth home. Shrimp kept out in the open, no ice during guest brunch, so this caused stomach upset. Reported it to management, but this was not taken seriously. Yesterday's potato salad tasted moldy. Not made in house. Father's day bbq a rip off. Low quality burger, only very basic condiments and packaged salads, again, nothing made in premises. Very poor outings planned. Many involve walking, which reduces the number of people who can attend. I have written and suggested many outings but these are ignored by management. The van sits in the front driveway for days to give the appearance that residents are taken out, when this is not the case. Staff in dinning room are very unhappy with pay and work conditions. Management does not listen to their needs. Cleaning staff have been given more rooms to do now in order to cut costs. Staff working conditions affect the residents' living conditions.

Review of Canterbury Place Retirement Residence Toronto, ON

I was recovering from back surgery, and the care and attention I received at Canterbury Place was wonderful. The staff and the residents made me feel very welcome. I participated in many of the activities and met many great friends. I have attended a couple of special events since my surgery and it was great to see my my friends again.

A wonderful experience

I was in Canterbury Place for two wonderful weeks on respite care, following an operation. I was overwhelmed with the hospitality and the service. They took care of my every need and I enjoyed those activities I was able to participate in. It is an extremely well run Retirement Residence and plan to make it my home when I feel I can no longer manage on my own.

Respite Care

I am very happy with the attention to care and service I received from Canterbury Place. I had no idea what to expect but this residence has exceeded my expectations. The first day I moved in I had just been released from hospital after having a back operation, and everyone I met called me by my first name, which I thought was very nice. All these residents to remember, it made me feel special. The care was excellent and because of this, I believe I am on a quicker road to recovery. I enjoyed participating in the activities and games, and met so many wonderful people. Thank you Canterbury Place.
