A large landscaped lawn leads up to the neoclassical building of Brown Deer Place. Hand-carved pieces rest on the black brick fireplace bringing warmth to seniors in individual living, memory care, and respite care. The home-like community is less than 5 miles from the World's Largest Wooden Nickel, the Antique Car Museum of Iowa, and an over 200-acre golf course. Veterans with VA Aid may be eligible for benefits.
Beyond round-the-clock care, seniors have emergency pendants to ensure their safety. Caregivers coach everyday skills to seniors in memory care to create more independence. Scheduled transportation allows residents to attend doctor’s appointments and community outings to explore the suburb of Iowa City. Beyond cats and dogs, the pet-friendly community also allows birds and fish.
The community prioritizes residents' experience, which is showcased in a variety of programs offered, such as Dare to Dream, Red Carpet Service, Music Speaks, LifeShare, and US Foods. The cozy restaurant-style dining area serves nutritious meals with recipes inspired by US Foods. Coordinators meet with each resident to learn more about their unique personality and preferences. This helps them create the activities that are scheduled monthly. On nice days, seniors can enjoy the greenery surrounding the outdoor patio with...

I would recommend if the person had severe dementia, they are very friendly the only complaint she has is that the food is not very good.

I moved to Brown Deer Place from a different Senior Living Community in Iowa City. Brown Deer Place is a total difference and so much more enjoyable. Very glad I made the move to this community.

My experience has been awesome. Generally, every person has bent over backwards to help me with what I need. I'm so very pleased with Brown Deer.

I liked Brown Deer. I liked their "concept" of working with all incomes and doing whatever they can to meet residents needs, like hospice. However, I did think it was a bit run down/dingy looking. There was an odor of urine, and the front desk lady was a bit unprofessional in my opinion.
I believe the residents need a bit more supervision. The staff are good to work with if the family has questions or concerns about our loved one. There are three meals a day served to the residents. The community provides an activities calendar for the residents to view. The staff are good and keep in touch with me about my loved one.

Staff keeps busy with lots of activities and can be very social with other residents. People are encouraged to be out and about, enjoy live music, karaoke, and chat with all. Outside events are very pleasant and host with community. Help was expedient when injured as well.

We moved our sister in law [name removed] into Brown Deer Place last November. That was the best thing we could have done for her. [Name removed] was living at home by herself and her health was getting the best of her. Since her arrival at BDP her health has improved dramatically. She now gets three delicious meals a day. We no longer worry about her not eating. She also has made many new friends to keep her company. We also like BDP is conveniently located close to stores, doctor offices, banks, and about any where you might want to go in Coralville. Our decision to choose BDP was easy after we met the staff. [name removed],[name removed] and all staff members are truly professional and ready care for their residents. There is no doubt that when my wife and I are ready to take it easy and enjoy life,BDP is where we will be heading.[Name removed]

My mom moved into Brown Deer months ago and they have exceeded my expectations. She was very resistant to moving from our home to an independent/assisted living. However, everyone was so warm and welcoming that mom adjusted very quickly. I am sure this is due to the warm inviting family community they strive for. [Name removed] & [name removed]’s door is always open and anytime I have had questions or concerns they were addressed immediately. My mother’s happiness is always a priority. I have also observed that everyone that works there seems to love their job. I highly recommend Brown Deer.

BDP is exceptional in facility, Staff, activities, amenities, & food. That is our experience after 2 years living here! The key criteria in your decision are people & size (feels like family.... not a "cold, over-sized institution" … that's BDP!). Wonderful place to live with caring, professional Staff & fun/active residents that will "make your day"! The best choice for senior living in the Iowa City area. Stands out among many choices!

My Mom moved into Brown Deer Place (BDP) in August of 2010 with her husband who had dementia. He lived in memory care while she lived in independent living. This worked very well as Mom did not have to go outside the building to see her husband and was allowed to stay with him in the daytime for as long as she wanted. She usually stayed from 6:30 A.M. until around 8 P.m. They ate their meals together. But she went back to her apt. to sleep. When he passed away in 2011, Mom chose to continue to live at BDP as she said that was where her friends lived. The other resident were very supportive and caring as were the staff. Mom really liked [name removed], the manager as well as [name removed] ( public relations) and her husband who came occasionally. She also liked the maintenance man, [name removed] and [name removed], the supervisor of the caregivers . There are too many others to mention who were so helpful. There was also one resident who would reprogram her TV, let her know what channel the Hawks were on, and put new batteries in her weather radio and lift chair as needed. Mom did not always like what was being served at mealtimes, but knew she could order off a menu and get what she wanted. Mom loved the activities and participated in most of them. A favorite was Bingo, comedy and music presentations by people from outside the building, visits from children in the surrounding schools, physical fitness classes, reading books from the library or reading the newspaper, doing puzzles, weekly trips to the store or Walmart as well as drives to see the sights around the area. She could have used the shuttle for appointments but I was able to do that with her. I also set up her medications on a weekly basis. When she was hospitalized during her stay, Mom either went for a period of time, to memory care for assisted living or sometimes came directly back to independent living with personnel assisting her as needed, checking on her frequently. And they brought meals to her room when she didn't feel she could go to the dining room She loved the social gatherings which occurred weekly and also the popcorn which was popped once a week. Overall, my Mom was where she wanted to be and liked the place very much as the staff (for an extra charge) made her bed daily, assisted her with her shower twice a week, cleaned her apt. weekly and changed her sheets weekly as well as doing all of her wash. I would recommend BDP.

Looked great at first, but our mother said the care was not what you paid for meals were terrible, chef quit, fed Mexican food 3-4 times a week. Elevator broke all the time and she was on second floor. Bed bugs on lower level by bingo room found in some ones room. how does this happen in an assisted living facility??? The maintenance man was the nicest man there and the most caring. The little gal doing the interviewing doesn't have a clue what is going on, or the Manager for that fact either. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. We have since moved our mother , where she is getting great care.

I am very happy with Brown Deer Memory care unit in Coralville where I found a place for my sister. It is perfect for her with the level of care that she needs at this time. I spend time with her almost every day so I have had many opportunities to interact with the staff and observe their interactions with other residents. I am so relieved to see my sister in a safe and appropriate new home and to be relieved of the cares that she now needs. [Removed]

January 25, 2018We so appreciate you taking the time to share this valuable feedback. Thank you for choosing Brown Deer Place and let us know how we can make your sister's life even more enjoyable at our community. It is our pleasure!
I’m really pleased with this place. I’m really surprised the amount of care that my love one gets. She’s in assisted living so she can feel some type of independence, but she also has supervisors looking after here every so often. The facility itself has a very straight forward layout. It’s very good for someone like my love one and it’s impossible to get lost. They also have a nice outdoor area off the lounge where residents could sit outside. All in all I am pleased with this location and it’s better than I expected.

I was really impressed with this community and the tour I was given was very well done by the staff. They took their time showing me around and they answered all my questions. there were a lot of amenities for the residents. I really liked this community but my mom already had her heart set on another community where she felt she would be more comfortable.

September 11, 2017Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! We appreciate hearing that your tour was done to exceed your expectations. Should anything change, we would gladly welcome your mother to our Brown Deer Place family!
I really liked this community but for what we were looking for they only had a studio apartment and I didn't feel like my mom would have liked that sort of floor plan. The staff was nice and the community itself appeared clean and well maintained.

September 11, 2017Thank you for taking the time to review Brown Deer Place and your experience. We are sad to hear that we were not your choice for your mother. Should anything change, we would love the opportunity to discuss her options further. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us!
It has been an adjustment process for me with my move to this community. It is a nice looking community. They do a good job with the cleanliness. The meals are okay, but there is some room for improvement. The staff is good for the most part. Overall it is still an adjustment process for me at this community.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
