Brookdale Monterey is a wonderful place. I enjoy working with each staff member there. The love and compassion everyone has for their residents is so clearly evident. I highly recommend this memory care. Allison is absolutely wonderful and will be a great deal of help to get your loved one the care they need.

It's a 1 for us. Our overall experience with Brookdale Monterey was terrible. Our loved one was rarely changed or bathed. And my 2 year old grandson found a moldy chicken bone hidden in the common area. It was gross. The friendliness of staff is hard to rate because some people were very nice but when it came to voicing our concerns about our loved one they were, once again, terrible. Quality of care is a -1. Or 1 since that's your scale. Our loved one was frequently forgotten about and his oxygen cannula was misplaced or taken off, etc. his blood oxygen and pulse dipped so low I'm surprised he's still alive and talking to us today. And, as I said before he was rarely changed and his things were constantly lost. They made him wear women's diapers when we always made sure he had men's diapers. I could go on but it's a lot. Meals/dining was okay. We kept requesting easier to eat foods for our loved one to eat but they kept giving him hard to eat items like soup. One of the employees provided great activities in the beginning of our experience with Brookdale but she went to part time and the activities quality dipped. Value for cost is a 1. Our experience did not justify the incredible cost they charge for bare minimum care. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

Response from Brookdale Monterey
January 11, 2024Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. Your feedback will be shared with management.
Brookdale Monterey was very nice and I really liked the facility. It would've worked very well. Honestly we chose [facility name removed] because my mother is also at that facility and it was just easier to have them both close since I'm her only child and he has no children. It's just me so I made the decision based on that.
We have been very pleased with the services at Brookdale Monterey. I would like more activities that help to maintain memory-card games? Picture books? I would be happy to help develop these activities for my husband.

This facility has been adequate to my wife's needs for over two years, during which time it was heavily burdened by the pandemic. The staff are caring, well trained, and very disciplined.

After [name removed] was hired as Director, things are starting to improve everyday. She truly cares and it shows. She had a lot on her plate and she's already done amazing things.

The community is clean and has a very welcoming environment. Staff are polite and seem to really care about the residents, my loved one says the staff treat him nice. So far so good.

I thought Brookdale Monterey was a great facility. It had more energy than any other place that we visited. It felt like you were definitely walking into an environment where there were a bunch of people around. And they had things going on all the time. That might have actually been too much stimulation for my loved one though. But it was a beautiful facility. The staff were great. I have absolutely nothing bad to say.
We think the value of this community was terrific, and the care from the care givers was great, and the staff was very responsive to whenever we called and whenever we needed something. We never felt that we were held in the dark. Our only concern we had was regarding the efficiency in getting our loved one his medication. He had been exhibiting some aggressive behavior and after weeks a figuring out why and what was wrong, we realized it was the management of the medication was lacking. However, the director of the is fabulous.

After caring for my husband at home I was exhausted. [Name removed] and [name removed] visited us at home a couple of times and I visited Brookdale with my husbands sister. We were welcomed and made to feel like family. We decided to look no further. My husband settled right in and never asked to go ‘home’. He is home. He feels safe and content.

Well, it's not all that we were led to believe. The "fantastic food" prepared by a "world-famous chef"...well, I could cook it better and have it more edible! It's mostly chicken, much of it too hard for the residents to chew well and not provided with gravy even to make it palatable. No condiments are given...butter, ketchup, mustard, etc. If you ask for butter for the rolls, all they have is melted butter in a dish. Who does that??? They never serve milk unless you specifically ask for it. We asked for it to be served every meal, but no, you have to ask every single time for it, and if someone is living there who doesn't communicate well and no family is there to ask, then they are out of luck. The regular bathroom schedule we were led to believe exists doesn't exist either. Often they are left to just be wet until it soaks through to their wheelchairs and leaves them smelling bad. The activities that are done are good, but more are needed especially on Saturday and Sunday when the residents are bored. The nurses are good about doing medications and working with you on pharmacies and such and the transportation is good to appointments. This may be the best memory care in Lubbock, but there are definite improvements that could and should be made -- or else quit advertising all the stuff that isn't happening!

The facility was bright and inviting. I was impressed to see the amount of activity the residents were involved in on a regular Wednesday.

This is an very active community. They keep the residents very busy through out the day. For some people that would great, but for my mother she isn't that active. Another thing I noticed was that they only had shared rooms available. Also there wasn't any locks on the doors. So that means anybody can walk into the rooms. This just wasn't the community for my mother and her needs.

They can improve by making sure the bathrooms are clean and making sure the toilet paper ring is there. Some of the workers need to work on their attitude. Not all have an attitude but some there needs improvement. They need to work on the way they are with the elders.

They need to improve on communication and promptness at Brookdale Monterey. I just went and visited dad last night and found him with a 101 temperature and extremely swollen knees. No one had called me and whats worse is no one even bothered to give him a Tylenol or anything. I was pretty upset. I will say the staff usually do a pretty good job though. Dad can be difficult at times and they really try to work with him. He has enjoyed the activities there quite a bit. Overall things have been good, I am just hoping what happened yesterday never happens again.

I just think that the staff at Brookdale Monterey was exceptionally caring, and even though my dad did not have much of a personality left when he got there all the aides seemed to really care about him.
