I had a family member living there. Their room is spot cleaned but her toilet is never fully cleaned. It is covered in weeks upon weeks of stains! The care management team is impossible to get ahold of. I’ve left numerous messages that are not returned. When I call, I’m told that the cre management team is either on vacation, in a meeting, or not in. When I ask when will they be back, I’m told “I don’t know”. When I have visited, I’ve observed feces on the floor of my loved ones room, and feces on my loved ones pillow! The stench in their room was horrible! BIOHAZARD!! My loved one doesn’t like to shower, like many dementia patients, and they are unable to get them to shower. There are more persuasive ways to get a dementia patient to comply. This facility is extremely understaffed. They have an extremely high turn-over rate. This facility is about taking your money while providing bare minimum level of care.

Response from Brookdale Columbia
October 10, 2023We take your comments seriously and are committed to providing quality service and care. Your comments have been shared with our corporate management team for review.
The minimum requirement for respite stay is 2 weeks for the first time. They said we might be able to do 1 week if we use them again. It was more expensive than other facilities that I looked at, but it was all on one level and less confusing for Mom to acclimate to. We were pleased with the care and would definitely consider using the facility again for Respite Care.
Read MoreI have visited as a healthcare professional to Brookdale Columbia. The staff are caring and the residents looked happy and at home. It is in a very safe area and the doors are secure. You would feel comfortable knowing your loved one is well cared for.

We picked this community, because of word of mouth. It would be nice if they had more staff on-hand, since they are often short staffed. Also, they should offer more of a variety of food options. It's a nice quiet location, with a great garden area. They really interact well with the residents. Overall, I would recommend to other families.

This place needs to be shut down. The staff yelled at residents witnessed by outside care staff. The community doesn't go around and check to see if your loved one is eating what is presented, and the staff get agitated about making different requests for food for residents. The memory care residents are being yelled and cursed at to get back in their rooms at night.

We've been very pleased. The transition to move in there seemed to go very smoothly, which I think has a lot to do with the staff making them feel comfortable being there. For my mother, I liked that the facility is smaller. I'm not sure she would have handled a larger facility quite as well. The facility is generally clean, although they were a little slow getting in to clean her room initially. The hallway carpet is looking a little worn, but the rooms are are hardwood floors, which are very nice. And everything seems to be working itself out. I feel the care is going very well. I couldn't ask for more. They keep me informed, and I'm just very pleased.

The whole staff can not be any better. Everyone is patient and understanding with not only the resident but also the resident's family members. They do a check on all the residents to make sure they stay involved and socialized throughout the day. My mom feels like she is part of a community and so much more satisfied living here than she was living alone in her house. She was depressed, lonely and confused after my Dad passed away. But, now she feels at home and is happy again. We couldn't be more happier with our choice and so happy that we used A Place for Mom to help guide us thru this process.

Finding a home for my mom was really hard due to the lack of AL facilities in our geographical area that welcome Alzheimer’s residents. I needed her to be within a one hour drive from both my home and her old home without being near Nashville traffic. I believe I made the right decision on my mother’s behalf. Brookdale Columbia met all of my check marks and “felt” good during all my visits. I love the staff and all the activities they offer to keep my mother moving and her mind engaged. The facility has a great circular footprint the wraps around a pretty green space that residents can safely enjoy. During the summer, some of the residents grew flowers and had their own container gardens. I like that mom can get fresh air anytime and look at the birds and flowers without the worry of her wandering away. The rooms are spacious and feel like little apartments instead of hospital rooms. It’s very clean, the food is good, the atmosphere is a good, the staff interacts with her frequently and often makes her laugh. My mother likes to show off her decorated “apartment” to visitors and then give them a Little Debbie snack from the stash in her mini kitchen. She has settled in well and now calls it home. This was no small task and I credit the wonderful staff for helping her make the disorienting transition. Mom had to transition from living on a farm in a rural area to living in an apartment in the city. Overall I am at peace with my decision knowing my mom is finally safe, eats good food regularly, takes her meds when she’s supposed to, and is offered daily exercises and important social interactions. Some residents have small dogs/cats so mom gets to pet them and that also lifts her spirits. She is happy which is the ultimate reward after an exhausting search. I love Brookdale Columbia and all the caring staff!! I’m already thinking about living here myself! ??

I was able to tour this community for care for my mom. The staff did answer all of my questions on the care that she would have received. The menu was appealing and the community is very clean. They offer a good variety of meals. All of-of activities is an offer to the residents who want to participate. We do recommend the care of this community for families

They have been awesome. They are one of the nicest and friendliest places in Columbia. They go above and beyond to make sure that their residents are attended to. They make me feel very welcomed. The facility is very clean. There is never a mess. The value is excellent for the care that you receive. Everything has been going great. This is a very nice community with nice people. I would recommend it.

We toured this community while looking into care options for a loved one. I thought this was a very nice place, overall! The employees that we met were all very friendly, and the facility itself was well kept and clean. My loved one ended up deciding against moving into a senior community, but this one is at the top of our list if things change!

I liked the location of this facility. It was not in a heavy commercial area but very convenient to the hospital. It was a lock down facility that the only access is by a staff person letting you in. Each unit was total hardwood, large walk in showers. Nice dining hall. Met a 93 year old man who had been there 2 years and really like the care, staff and food. They do get a choice of food for meals. The studio was a bit small but the one bedroom was a good size. Lots of closet space and cabinet space in every unit. They had a inter courtyard that was nice for the residents to be able to be outside without the ability to wonder off. The building was designed in a circle so no resident will get lost, they can simply keep walking until they get to their apartment. Very clean. LPS from 6am-10pm. Then aids on staff. Effective 1/1/2015 a RN will be on staff 24/7.

They just don't seem to have anything going on. He'll sit in his room and watch t.v. all day. He needs more encouragement than just mingle. He isn't happy with the food. The billing system they have is horrible, it's really confusing. We picked them because we liked the layout, where they could be in the courtyard in the middle so they could be outside, safely.

I moved my brother to this community in order to have him closer to me, and it was definitely a step down from his last community. It is always difficult to find nurses and/or caregivers on duty, they seem to be understaffed or at least do not have enough on duty at one time. When they are on duty, they do not seem very attentive to the needs of the residents. There are almost no activities for residents: they spend a lot of time in their rooms or sitting around. I have also had a lot of trouble with the billing procedures, it seems like they are trying to rip off residents. The bills are very difficult to decipher, and you can get charged multiple times for something if you do not read carefully. I have spoken to the staff and their headquarters about this, and nobody has been helpful.

I visited Sterling House of Columbia and was impressed by their cleanliness and friendliness. It is a very nice, modern place. They offer 4 different church services on Sunday's and also offer a variety of activities which is important to us. There is a very nice interior courtyard where residents can keep garden planters and grow flowers or vegtables and is also secured!

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale Columbia 8.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
