I miss my friends

I have spent almost 5 months at Brookdale due to the illness of my resident family member. Staff and other residents have made me welcome and comfortable and have been a tremendous support. I recommend Brookdale highly.

Getting Older With Less Stress and More Fun

My wife and I had an excellent time visiting Brookdale Battery Park City. We were greeted by the excellent staff, especially [name removed] and [name removed], and treated to a tour and eats. The best was the presentation which described the facilities, programs and amenities available to the residents. We were pleasantly surprise and left very impressed.. On one of our visits we were able to sample some more delicious food and dance!!! We are seriously considering this for our future and recommending this to our friends.

Smoky hallways and deferred maintenance

Toured In the spring and again recently. One floor smelled very strongly of smoke and the manager told me it was being taken care of. Toured again months later and there was no improvement. Common areas were clean if dated. Pool area was uninviting and needed tile repair Food was ok, but can’t picture eating it 3x a day Heard from residents that there is a high YoY rent increase

Deceptive sales and large YoY rent increases

We toured in the Spring with plans to sign/move in in the fall. The sales people were pushy, but we were firm. They invited my father to a dinner in May and he came home that night to tell me he put down a deposit- he was not clear that he signed a lease and was now responsible for monthly payments. Unfortunately, the unit he was given was one we had specifically said we did not like because the neighbor was a smoker and the smoke smell was VERY strong. He enjoyed living there, but the HVAC in common areas did not work and the elevators were down consistently resulting in FDNY response fairly consistently. There was also frequent turnover in staff which was upsetting to residents. Lastly, the 2022 increase was 10% and the 2023 increase was 11%- so after paying for a year rental and living there for 4 months, and seeing many friends leave, I'm moving out.

Some positive some negative

I have been at Battery Park Brookdale for over a month… not many here who are very independent…maybe they were when they moved in. Location near park and river is wonderful. Public busses , one of them a free neighborhood bus, are very convenient. People here are intelligent & accomplished. Activities are interesting: Juilliard students, musicians & speakers. Pool closed weekends. Brookdale busses are good, but do not really do all they should. Staff are mostly good, some excellent and dedicated. They work hard hours in terrible heat, and I am guessing low wages since the turnover is great. Real problems from an aging building & poor maintenance. Is the Brookdale Company or building owner responsible for the roof leaks, elevator disruptions, serious air conditioning problems in all the public spaces including the dining room? Food is pretty good/sometimes truly awful.. especially the special lobster event:mine was tough, dry and RAW (!I) in one spot. Often it is salty.

Best of the lot

We secured a fabulous unit with a huge terrace where we can have our planters. Its about 1300sq feet and we love having our planters out there - it beats any other assisted living unit. If you are feeling lonely there is a custom here where the residents invite other resident to join them for dinner - we have received many invitations which has been quite pleasant. There is a huge range of activities throughout the week which is nice. Based on our experience so far we would recommend Brookdale Battery Park City to other families and in fact we know other people who have left their current community to come here,

Food is subpar at best

My father has been a resident of the Battery Park City for about a year. While the apartment is nice, the dining room food is pretty terrible. I’m not sure whether the problem is due to bad recipes, bad provision, cooks who can’t, or a combination thereof, but the result is food swimming in mayonnaise, shimmering with grease, overcooked, over-salted, just crappy. During a recent visit, my father explained that he often skips meals because he can’t stomach most of the food - by the way, his stomach is fine, and is not a picky eater. I am quite concerned that he was consistently in danger of malnourishment. Suggestions/complaints seem to be ignored. Disgraceful.

Brookdale - excellent alternative

My mom moved into Brookdaleat the age of 98. The staff could not have been more gracious or helpful to both my mother and our family. We need to take advantage of the additional services offered on the premises - all of which are excellent. Unfortunately my mom died six months after she moved in.

We loved the concept of independent living. Broodale of Battery Park is an alternative to living alone. The apartments are large, bright and very clean. The food was amazing and the community was very inviting. [Name removed] was extremely thoughtful and was very patient with my friend who is 88 years old. Although my friend may not be ready to leave her home, when she decides to do so this will be her first choice

A tour for care

We toured this community for my mom. We did like that they had a large elevator for the residents to get to the lower floor. The menu is appealing and they offer a lot of choices. This is a community that is able to give all types of different care We like this community for the nice care that is offered from the questions that the staff was able to answer. We would recommend that families tour this community for the care of a loved one for the options that are available.

We toured this community for care. The staff was nice and helpful to answer the questions we had. The community was clean and a very nice atmosphere My father did not feel that this community gave him a comfortable feel, but it was very elegant. Families might want to tour this community for the care of a loved one.

Great Staff Communication!!

I feel that the staff tries very hard to make sure that my care is great. The breakfast is superb i really enjoy it and dinners are usually very satisfying. At the moment i have not really been engaging in activities. I have done the Thai chi and i really enjoyed it. The other activities offered are also great as well and i plan on engaging in them in the future.

A luxurious space where one can live with dignity and in safety

Brookdale is a beautiful space with a wonderful , helpful and dedicated staff. The meals are copious and first rate and the chef accommodates specific food preferences . There are many activities that one can participate in and the surrounding neighborhood could not be more vibrant and visually magnificent.

Great place

The apartments are not modern enough. The food could be more specialized to fit the more specific diets. Otherwise that is the only thing I am unhappy about. It is a pretty nice facility. It's a good place.

Great, if you can afford it

Brookdale is a lovely, high-class, high-price place, in a lovely, high-class, high-price neighborhood. A baby grand piano sits in the middle of a grand living room, while piped-in classical music and jazz waft lightly through the air. The dining room looks like a mid-level restaurant that's trying to be upper-echelon (the breakfast and lunch offerings are not impressive, while the dinners are very impressive). There's a pool and whirlpool, along with a rec center complete with its own kiln; exercise classes, movies, and social events are a regular occurrence. If you're not very mobile, the neighborhood isn't great for errand-running. Stores, banks, and restaurants are a non-trivial walk from Brookdale. But just a block away is a lovely waterfront park that, while fairly overrun with young exercise buffs, offers a serene view and lots of sun. Also, Brookdale shuttle buses cruise the neighborhood for easy access to nearby locations. The two rooms I saw (one-bedroom apartments) were pretty spacious (especially for NYC), bright, clean, and well laid-out. The showers were nice and low, and had built-in seats and grab bars. There's a regular visiting doctor (who keeps regular hours on-site) who my father really liked. Medication management and other related care is farmed out to a third-party agency. They're not cheap, but seem thorough and nice enough. In the end, my father decided he wanted to move back to his old neighborhood, and only wound up at Brookdale for a few weeks. He had some complaints about what he called the phony, surfacey niceness of the staff and residents there, but I'm not sure how seriously to take that, as he was unsettled when he moved in, to say the least. He said that the residents talked a lot about their houses in the Hamptons, and concluded that people who aren't filthy rich aren't going to be comfortable there. Again, your mileage may vary. I imagine I'd be more than happy to move in there when my time comes.
