Bridges by EPOCH at Westwood Treats My Mom Like Family

I made the very difficult decision in July 2020 to move my mother into a memory care facility - during COVID, with only virtual tours available at all the facilities I looked into for her. The staff at Bridges in Westwood was amazing. The fearless staff handled the pandemic with grace and love for our loved ones. One staff member literally stopped us in the hallway to give my mom a hug. It brought a smile to my mom's day, which again reinforced we made the right decision. The facility is beautiful - a welcoming lobby, wonderful courtyard and deck area, and many places for the residents to gather with one another. The monthly activities calendar is always robust. I can honestly say Bridges treats my mom like family and knowing she's loved by the staff, given wonderful meals each day, is safe and treated by nursing staff when necessary has lifted so much weight off my shoulders. I highly recommend Bridges by EPOCH at Westwood!... Read more

Bridges by Epoch - Epic Failure

My mom was a resident for 4 years in their Westwood facility until we recently moved her out to a safer environment where she is now well cared for. The experience left us frustrated and frightened. Upper management promises to rectify inattentiveness and unsafe practices but failed miserably on all accounts. I had to constantly oversee and remedy situations myself. In addition, because they are grossly understaffed, I had to pay for private aides to care for mom. The facility looks nice, but it's all smoking mirrors. The majority of staff are aloof and not held accountable for their inactions. You get the feeling that corporate only cares about heads in beds and are willing to take in residents who clearly need to go directly to a nursing home. Repeated assurances by management to correct issues proved worthless and we were left with no options other than to move mom out.

terrible

my sister was a resident this past winter. I want to warn other desperate family members that what they tell you they will do is not true! No continuity of staff or care. Aids on cell phone all day. One nurse was great and one kitchen helper was kind. The rest including head nurse and director were uncaring once they got our money. be ware if your loved one needs anything more than 3 meals a day go else where! Sadly my sister past away and the director never even called to express sympathy. pathetically cold and indifferent from beginning to end!

Home away from home

My family and I are so happy to have found bridges in Westwood, MA! The staff work as a family, and the atmosphere felt more like a home then a clinical setting. I found all the outdoor spaces are very inviting, even during the winter!

highly recommend this integral facility

Just like many other places they are understaffed at times and we do take that into consideration but because of that sometimes the quality of care slips through the cracks. However whenever we bring this to the staff attentions or have any questions or concerns they admit to it, they do not make up excuses and they own that fact that somethings may not be as closely paid attention to as they should be. We really appreciate their honestly because that goes a long way. It overall is a really great place - right when you walk in it just has this really great atmosphere to it. The residents all seem very happy and our loved one adjusted really well which we did not think would happen. The activities get 10 stars, we like how they are more geared to getting the resident's to interact with one another.

Tour experience

I was not crazy about Bridges by EPOCH. It seemed a little too big and too cooperate. It is in an area that is being developed so there is a lot of traffic. They also focus on memory care and my loved one was not ready for that yet. They did a really nice job on the tour though.

Be careful

Light on staff at off-peak times. Staff need more training in dealing with those with dementia. Observed "activities" focus on TV-watching and listening to music via earphones. Residents oddly passive. "All-inclusive" does not mean there won't be extra charges; it just means all levels of dementia are accepted, including final stage. There may be significant extra charges if you need to hire a companion, etc. Their one-sided contract allows them, for example, to expel a resident at their discretion. Read that contract very carefully, and go by its wording, not by what you are told verbally. Attractive place; family members will like the look of it.

Response from Bridges by EPOCH at Westwood

March 16, 2018

We appreciate you taking the time to review our community, though we are sorry to learn your experience was anything less than exceptional. We are very proud of the comprehensive care we provide to our residents, including activities shown to improve engagement and cognition while minimizing agitation in people with memory loss. Our music program (the earphones) is invaluable for connecting residents to deep memories and assisting them with hearing and focus. Many residents respond very positively to these activities, which are personalized to reflect and recall their lives and tastes. We have the same number of staff on duty in the evening as we do in the daytime, which ensures residents receive the care they need 24 hours a day. While our rates are all-inclusive, there are some limits legally to the type of care we can provide, and that is because we are an assisted living community rather than a skilled nursing facility or hospital. We strive to help every resident live comfortably and safely. Our mission is to fully support them and their family through a challenging disease process. It can happen that a person’s condition changes a great deal, and there are times when it is in the best interest for their safety, and the safety of those around them, for a resident to transition into a different type of setting. As difficult as that is, we want the best care situation for everyone, and a different care setting may be more appropriate. Please give us a call so we can learn more about your specific situation. We have so many families who have thanked us for the work we do, the service we provide and the approach we offer, and we hope you'll reach out to us so we have the opportunity to address your concerns directly.

Not a good experience

Our experience with Bridges has not been good, so far, my loved one is really not enjoying it. The memory care unit is brand new, with very few residents, which also means very few staff. It just seems like a lot of what they sold us on while we were touring is not in place yet. For example, the food has been very disappointing. We were told there would be a menu to order off of, and good meal variety, but this has not been the case at all.

Above and Beyond!!

I can't begin to say how happy i am with this community. The staff has been so wonderful to my father and family. The meals along with the portions they offer are great. They assist in taking him to doctor's appointments and taking care of his medicine all for a flat rate. I love how they are always communicating with us. I know my father feels like this is home.

Love, love, love, LOVE it! I want them to have a 10 out of 5!

Love, love, love, LOVE it! I can't say enough good things. It was a no brainer, especially for memory care. Most places just have an area for them. These people are specialist, here, they know what they are doing, it's all they do there. The people are friendly, and the facilities are beautiful. I want them to have a 10 out of 5!
