Located in Lake Michigan’s beautiful beach town of Holland, American House Holland offers assisted living, memory care, and independent living services. This uniquely designed community features either a sunroom or a fountain-view patio in every building. There's even a lovely koi pond for residents to enjoy.
Residents in the assisted living and memory care communities receive three healthy meals per day, personal care assistance, medication administration, housekeeping, and laundry. As for those who are fully independent but could benefit from a safe and relaxing environment, American House Holland offers independent living services. Floor plans include one- and two-bedroom villas that are equipped with all the necessary amenities.
In addition to receiving quality care, residents also have access to a wide variety of recreational and social activities, such as planned outings, on-site fishing, and many dining options. They can catch a movie in the theater, visit the wellness spa, get their hair done in the salon, or play some games in the billiards room — all on-site. At American House Holland, the opportunities are endless.

Response from American House Holland
October 2, 2024Emily, thanks so much for your feedback! We appreciate you being open and honest with us!
All the rooms are very hot. They only have an AC unit in the bedroom. My parents often complain about the quality of their food. Seriously I think the independent living there is better suited for single people who have the drive to participate and aren't afraid to mingle without prodding.

What an amazing place for my mom. There are lots of caring staff. She’s made friends and has gotten involved in many activities. It is wonderful that she is allowed to have her cat live with her! She loves living there!

Zero concerns now. What we like the most about American House is the location, how clean it is and how comforting it is. I would recommend this community to other families based on the experience we have had.

I would not recommend American House. Although my stepmother was 100 when I took her from American House she was still quite independent. While she was in rehab for her hip I met with Rest Haven and they never once asked me about her finances. Upon registering her for assisted living I did provide bank info. I also learned that the American House Asst. Living had to close one of their wings for improperly cooked foods and lack of staffing. That confirmed my decision to remove her from the premises.I do know that all management has since quit working there.

I'd say that overall it's a good place. It's clean and feels safe. The staff try to get to know each residents needs and preferences, and Mom has been able to develop trusting relationships with several staff who she feels safe talking to about any concerns. Having said that, there is a fair amount of staff turnover and shuffling around which makes it harder as a family member to develop a consistent contact person to go to with questions or concerns. I have also had to do more follow up than I expected to have to do to make sure things like medications changes have been implemented properly. I would recommend American House to a friend with the caveat that they need to be fairly hands on when it comes to double checking on follow through of staff on specific instructions, requests, etc

Response from American House Holland
June 20, 2024LB, thanks so much for your feedback! We appreciate you being open and honest with us.
American house is a beautiful, clean facility located on James street on Holland’s north side. If that is all you’re looking for, it may be the place for you. However, if you need any care-BEWARE! Being health care providers, We witnessed neglect and lack of personal help on numerous occasions. Clothes were not changed for a couple days. Showers weren’t completed for the first two weeks. Bells are answered slowly. Staff rarely call you by name. We were hesitant to move our mother to American house because her meds required close observation. American House assured us it wasn’t a problem, we felt safe to move her in. Unfortunately, they could not follow her adequately so levels to protect her dropped then came the Hospital admission for a stroke. Her Independence and exercise was discouraged. The Staff stated they had no formal training on transferring a wheelchair or walker dependent. Promised activities were lacking . Look around for the best place for your loved one

We moved my mother to American house in Holland to be near my house. What a costly mistake. They mixed up my mom’s medications and bill but didn’t seem to care. Some days, the care was okay but if someone called in sick, they didn’t always get replaced.. We moved her out because she didn’t like the food and we didn’t trust the care.

April 23, 2024Peter, thank you for your feedback. It's always our hope our residents and guests have a pleasant experience with us. When they don't, we want to personally hear about it. Feel free to reach out to our Vice President of Operations, Rhonda, at rhieber@americanhouse.com to discuss any concerns you may still have. We value your feedback and look forward to hearing from you.
My dad is currently a resident at American House Holland and the experience has been mostly good for him, so far. The facility is always very clean and I know that my dad is happy there. Everyone is very accommodating and helpful. However, I know there has been an issue with getting my dad's phone fixed and also getting his thermostat fixed. My sister is working on trying to reach someone to get these things taken care of. He can call out, but I can't reach him and he doesn't have a phone number. It's frustrating for me because I like to call him at least every other day.

September 25, 2023Karen, your kind compliments mean the world to our team at American House! It is our pleasure to serve our residents and their families each and every day. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
This was a place you'd want your parents to be 5 years ago, that is no longer the case. They can't keep employees because of poor pay and poor management. They run out of medications constantly! Food is poor and often is cold by the time you get it. Building Maintenance is poor. Reported multiple times that the dining room chairs were falling apart and finally they fixed one or two of them and the rest of them still are a danger. Constantly had to check if my mother had one of the good ones or bad ones. My mother needed a ride wit her wheelchair down to her meal and she pulled the cord and no one came. I arrived and the call light was on but the alarm for the employees to hear had been silenced. Thank goodness she had not Fallen. Pay more get more.

The business office can't get my mum's bill accurate. Mum moved in the [date removed] and her rent increased in January. They have misplaced a check I paid the rent in January but I have proof the check was paid by mum's bank. They have credited her account but check still missing. Mum says the food is awful. She does try to eat it but says it has no real flavor. Huge turnover in staff.

The nurses and everyday staff were amazing and super friendly, but they were very short handed and cannot handle the care needs that even assisted living residents had. They did not really have any activities provided for the residents so my loved one was often bored. The office staff like the manager [name removed] and admissions person [name removed], you get no communication whatsoever from them. I am still trying to get a hold of them to try and pay my last bill. They lost the cashiers check I gave them. It is impossible to get someone to call you back and talk to you. They also lost her wheelchair. It was the most horrid experience we have ever been through.

We really liked the community itself, it was very clean and the staff were friendly. We cannot speak to the dining service - our loved ones meals were delivered to the room but the meals were good. The staff that were there again were friendly but they were understaffed and unfortunately just wasn't able to meet the expectations we had. Also our loved one was wrongly assessed so we had to do a lot of things for her while she was there

March 25, 2022Shari, thank you for your 5-star review of our community! We appreciate your feedback.
We were promised to be seen by the physician and to have an appointment set up with their podiatrist and neither has happened in the several months our loved one has been there. That to us is very disappointing. We have had miscommunication and mishaps with our loved ones medication and to us that is a big negative and can be detrimental to our loved ones health which is extremely important to us. That needs improvement. They also could improve on their overall communication. Being the primary caregiver, this community we think would benefit from having a newsletter sent out or monthly meetings to bring the families together and to keep them updated with the constant changes going on in todays world. Besides the communication this is a 5 star community.

A Place for Mom has scored American House Holland 8.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
