Assisted living communities offer residential communities and health care for your loved one who might require a helping hand with everyday activities such as self-administering medication or mobility. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or dementia care. The state of Texas has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include assisted living standards, financial management, accessibility requirements, and confidentiality. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, personal care, general supervision or oversight, and activity and/or social program for residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, assisting residents with taking medications, and returning medications to the proper locked areas. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents.
