Paoli Nursing Home

The staff at Paoli Health and Living are so kind to their residents! They have a wonderful Rehab department that my mother would go to after a hospital stay. They are in a great location right across the street from the hospital.

Dishonest, uncaring, medically unsound 1. After admitting my friend, PHLC's medical director ([name removed]) never met with the patient. The paperwork says he did, but it never happened. 2. Despite having desperate medical needs, my friend never progressed toward diagnoses and no one recognized that carrying 40 pounds of fluid on your body is a bad thing. As his cellulitis became blisters that broke and ran, his condition declined over the month. 3. Staff was more concerned about paperwork and bureaucracy than in keeping my friend alive. 4. Staff held one meeting with me at my request, and they promised not only that insurance was not an issue, but that a "Medicaid Pending" status would kick in. Since insurance was the last of my worries, they told me to quit worrying about it. Three weeks later, after Anthem HIP was exhausted, they kicked him out. They also promised to meet with me every other week and give me all paperwork, which never happened. 5. When they gave this sick man his walking papers (literally), no one advised him that he could appeal being kicked out. His papers had an addendum stating a right to appeal giving him a stay of 30 days. He didn't read because he was ill and distraught over leaving. He didn't hand them to me, so I was unable to read. He was unfit to leave, but they made him leave anyway. 6. He had a severe flareup of cellulitis that morning, and the medical "professionals" chose not to treat it. They sent him on his way. 7. I had to get them to help me shove him into my car to get him out of the parking lot. I immediately drove him to the ER which treated him but refused to keep him. They had NO medical transport. ZERO. 8. His home was unfit to return to and PHLC did not check to see the condition of his home before releasing him. We had to call 911 four times over the next several days to get him off the floor or to a standing position. 9. As my friend began declining, and we could not get him to medical appointments, because he could not exit a car, I drove him to Bedford Regional ER. The staff was aghast what they saw in his declined state and in my distress. They admitted him immediately, kept him for several days, and treated him successfully. He then moved to Westview Nursing Home where the staff invited us to come. They came to the hospital to do the admittance paperwork, and they proceeded with Anthem HIP precertification and the Medicaid pending process for long-term care. In short: no one cared. Someone could have told me about Adult Protective Services, or better yet, his right to appeal, but they chose not to. Instead, I went on a wild goose chase for days, trying to get my friend help, while I exhausted myself, had to take off work to try to find assistance. My son was traumatized, and my friend slowly started to die. I wouldn't take my dog to this place. Stay away.
